Being diagnosed with cancer is an Earth-shattering event. However, not all cancers are the same. The Social Security Administration (SSA) recognizes that some cancers are especially aggressive. The SSA includes 49 cancers in its Compassionate Allowance Program.

Twenty-eight of these cancers have a low survival rate. Anyone who is diagnosed with one of these cancers is automatically eligible to receive expedited processing of his or her Social Security disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) application. Anyone diagnosed with these cancers will receive SSDI or SSI if they can show medical verification of a diagnosis:

  1. Acute leukemia
  2. Adult non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  3. Bilateral retinoblastoma
  4. Endometrial stromal sarcoma
  5. Esophageal cancer
  6. Ewing sarcoma
  7. Gallbladder cancer
  8. Glioblastoma multiforme (adult brain tumor)
  9. Glioma, grades III and IV
  10. Hepatoblastoma
  11. Leiomyosarcoma
  12. Liver Cancer
  13. Malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor
  14. Malignant germ cell tumor
  15. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL)
  16. Mucosal malignant melanoma
  17. Pancreatic cancer
  18. Peritoneal mesothelioma
  19. Peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis
  20. Pleural mesothelioma
  21. Primary central nervous system lymphoma
  22. Primary effusion lymphoma
  23. Pulmonary Kaposi sarcoma
  24. Salivary tumors
  25. Sinonasal cancer
  26. Small cell cancer of the large intestine, ovary, prostate, or uterus
  27. Small cell lung cancer
  28. Small intestine cancer

 

Twenty-one other cancers are included on the list. To qualify for the Compassionate Allowance Program, an applicant must show that the cancer is severe based on criteria set by the SSA. These cancers include:

  1. Adrenal cancer with distant metastases, or inoperable, unresectable, or recurrence
  2. Anaplastic adrenal cancer with distant metastases, or inoperable, unresectable, or recurrence
  3. Bladder cancer with distant metastases, or inoperable or unresectable
  4. Breast cancer with distant metastases, or inoperable or unresectable
  5. Carcinoma of unknown primary site
  6. Chondrosarcoma with multimodal therapy
  7. Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), blast phase
  8. Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma, metastatic or recurrent
  9. Head and neck cancers with distant metastases, or inoperable or unresectable
  10. Kidney cancer, inoperable or unresectable
  11. Large intestine cancer with distant metastasis; or inoperable, unresectable, or recurrent
  12. Lymphomatoid granulomatosis, grade III
  13. Malignant melanoma, with metastases
  14. Merkel cell carcinoma, with metastases
  15. Non-small cell lung cancer with metastases to or beyond the hilar nodes, or inoperable, unresectable, or recurrent
  16. Osteosarcoma, with distant metastases, or inoperable or unresectable
  17. Ovarian cancer, with distant metastases, or inoperable or unresectable
  18. Peripheral nerve cancer, metastatic or recurrent
  19. Spinal nerve root cancer, metastatic or recurrent
  20. Stomach cancer, with distant metastases, or inoperable, unresectable, or recurrent
  21. Ureter Cancer, with distant metastases, or inoperable, unresectable, or recurrent
