“I have a mantra, a principle which guides my life,” says Jessica Howell a VA Disability Case Manager at Cuddigan Law. “You never know what someone has been through, or is a about to go through, so just be kind.” That kindness serves Jess well in working with the firm’s clients who are often facing formidable challenges due to a service-related injury or illness and are now fighting an uphill battle with the VA.
“Knowing that I am directly assisting someone who has served their country is the best part of my job. Veterans sacrifice a lot for the greater good and helping them navigate a complex system to get the benefits they've earned is a deeply rewarding way to give back,” Jess relates. “Earning their trust, listening to their story, and showing them that you genuinely care is a powerful and meaningful part of the job. Seeing their relief when they realize they have an advocate on their side is incredibly satisfying.”
In addition to possessing a spirit of kindness, Jess has a strong work ethic. “I also work a part-time job,” she explains,” so my non-working time is minimal. In what free time I have I like to spend it working on various house projects to test my skills and use new tools. A Creighton basketball game will get me out of the house any day!”
“But I especially enjoy spending time with my two pit bulls Panda and Mia,” she says enthusiastically. “I am passionate about pit bull advocacy. I've found that a lot of the stigma around the breed comes from a lack of information, and I love the challenge of changing people's minds. It’s an opportunity to use my skills as a supportive listener and problem-solver to tackle misconceptions head-on. By focusing on facts, promoting responsible ownership, and sharing stories, I can help people see these dogs for the loving companions they truly are. It’s a great example of how education can make a tangible, positive difference.”
Just to fill a full plate a bit more, Jess also supports several not-for-profit causes including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Nebraska Humane Society, the Dreamweaver Foundation, and Project Houseworks.
