When you apply for disability benefits, the Social Security Administration will determine if there’s any type of work you’re able to perform despite the limitations caused by your impairments and the side effects of your medications or treatments. As your case progresses, Social Security will look at many factors including your past relevant work experience.

Under Social Security disability guidelines, past relevant work is any type of work that you have done in the past fifteen years. This work must have lasted long enough for you to learn the job and at a full time capacity for which you were paid wages or other compensation. If the Social Security determines that you can return to the type of work that you have done in the past, or apply your past job experience to another type of job, your application for Social Security Disability benefits will be denied

To assess your past relevant work Social Security requires that you complete the Work History Form. The basic objective of this form is to give the Social Security Administration a detailed snapshot of your work experience for the 15 years before you became disabled. The Work History Form will ask about the jobs you held in the past, the duties required in each position, and the skills and experience you gained in each job. The accuracy and completeness of the information about your past relevant work can make or break your case.
