According to a new report, the Social Security Administration has added 25 new conditions to its Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program. These allowances are important for individuals who are seeking Social Security Disability Insurance benefits in Nebraska and elsewhere. The CAL program is a unique option for individuals who suffer from some of the most serious disabilities. If an applicant has one of the disabilities included in the CAL program, their application is “fast tracked,” meaning they can avoid the appeals process. At times, that process can take two years or longer.
Currently, there are a total of 225 conditions listed as part of the CAL program. The new conditions include a dozen types of cancer. Applicants who qualify for the CAL program are able to demonstrate that they clearly meet the Social Security Administration’s disability standards.
How does a disabled applicant qualify for these benefits?
It is important to note that an applicant must be pro-active in order to receive the benefit of being a part of the CAL program, a fact that highlights the importance of seeking out an attorney for assistance. There are no special forms or applications to apply for the CAL program. Further, the Social Security Administration does not automatically notify applicants if they are eligible. An applicant who has professional assistance with the SSDI application, however, can help to ensure that the Social Security Administration is aware that their claim qualifies for expedited review.
Applicants who are approved as being eligible for CAL may still have to present additional medical evidence. The actual amount of time that it may take an applicant to receive their benefits can depend on certain factors, including the following:
- How quickly the Social Security Administration receives medical evidence.
- Whether a medical examination is needed to support the claim
- Whether the claim is subject to a quality assurance review.
