VA HealthcareIf you are enrolled in VA health care, you can receive durable medical equipment (DME) for free.  Covered items include CPAP supplies, hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, oxygen equipment, hearing aids, shower chairs, and other types of durable medical equipment and supplies.

To be eligible you must be enrolled in VA health care and registered at a VA medical center. The equipment must be medically necessary prescribed by VA physician to improve your ability to function or to treat a specific condition. The VA also covers repairs, replacements, and in some cases, custom fittings.

If you need a prosthetic device, the VA's Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service has more than 70 locations and more than 600 local contracts for the latest state-of-the-art medical devices They can also provide custom fabrication and fitting of prosthetics. If you need a service dog, while the VA does not directly train or provide service dogs to Veterans, the VA does provide veterinary health insurance, equipment, and support for service dogs that are prescribed by a clinician. Your service dog must be obtained from recognized, accredited agencies, such as those with Assistance Dogs International or the International Guide Dog Federation. If you believe you need a service dog for permanent hearing, eyesight, or mobility impairment contact your VA clinical team (doctor, mental health provider, or prosthetics representative) to initiate the referral process.

If you are a Veteran who is not using VA health care, you may be able to access other options for assistance with durable medical equipment. TRICARE and local Veterans service organizations may be able to provide or loan the medical equipment you need.
