Of all the cancers that impact patients throughout the U.S., colon and rectal cancer are among the most common. Studies show that these cancers are the third most diagnosed cancers today. Victims may find themselves facing months of expensive treatment. They also may be unable to work while they fight and recover from the disease. Fortunately, the Social Security Administration (SSA) does automatically grant disability benefits for certain sufferers of this disease.
Five Criteria for Obtaining Disability Benefits for Colon Cancer
In order to automatically qualify for disability benefits, your colorectal cancer must have advanced beyond a certain stage. For example, it cannot be a relatively simple and operable tumor. Instead, you must meet one of the following criteria:
- Your colorectal tumor is an adenocarcinoma that has come back after an initial remission.
- Your colorectal tumor is an adenocarcinoma that cannot be treated by surgery.
- Your colorectal tumor is an adenocarcinoma that cannot be removed entirely through surgery.
- Your colorectal tumor is a squamous cell carcinoma of the anus that came back despite having had surgery.
- Your colorectal cancer has spread beyond the lymph nodes closest to the site of the original tumor.
If your colorectal cancer meets one of the above criteria, you may qualify for benefits under Social Security’s disability listing for intestinal cancer. These benefits may provide you with much needed financial assistance. Treatments and their associated costs can be extremely expensive. The inability to return to your job may also present you with the challenge of trying to find a way to support yourself and your family while you fight this devastating cancer.
