Delaying filing for disability could cost you money and time. The decision to file for disability is often a very hard decision to make. Potential clients often say they put off filing because they hoped their health would improve and they would be able to back to work. We define who we are by the work we do and realizing that we are no longer able to do that work is stressful. Regulations govern how far back in time you can go for back pay and Medicaid and Medicare eligibility. The Social Security Disability program is not a short term or temporary disability program but if your illness, injury or condition is going to prevent you from working for a period of twelve months or longer, do not delay filing your application. Back pay for benefits cannot be obtained for more than one year prior to the date of the application. Eligibility for Medicare benefits is two years and five months after the onset of your disability. However in addition, you are not eligible to receive Medicare benefits more than twelve months prior to the date of your application.
