More than 15,000 people died from overdoses of opoid based pain medicines in 2010. There are claims of widespread abuse. Some in congress have pushed the agency claiming an epidemic The FDA proposes to reclassify the drugs in an effort to make them harder to get. The worry however is that this will increase barriers for patients with chronic pain problems such as those suffering from cancer. Some feel that prescription abuse prevention could be accomplished by physician education, drug monitoring databases and monitoring of suspicious pain clinics.
