Physicians at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha have been studying the effect of doxycycline on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms. An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a bulge in this artery that leads to the heart. This condition often goes undetected and is discovered as an incidental finding when a CT scan is performed on the patient looking for other problems. The discovery of the aneurysm often poses a health problem without an immediate solution. Treatment guidelines indicate that until the aneurysm reaches 5.5 centimeters in length, the surgical risks outweigh the risk that there will be a fatal event. What this means for the patient is watchfully waiting to see whether the aneurysm is growing. This study is part of a multi center study testing the effects of treatment with doxycyline in slowing the growth of the aneurysms. The study is seeking more subjects for enrollment. Social Security evaluates abdominal aortic aneurysms under listing 4.10 which identifies aneurysm with disection as not controlled by perscribed treatment.
