Since the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26th, 1990, great strides have been made toward access and equality for the disabled community. Though it’s clear that there’s still a lot of work to be done, the 23rd anniversary of the legislation is cause for celebration.
Participants from all over the state gathered in Iowa City’s Chauncey Swan Park for the 2013 Johnson County ADA Celebration on July 27th. Along with games, food and more traditional festival activities, the Celebration provided attendants with opportunities to learn more about the community of people with disabilities, such as:
- Speeches from representatives from D.C. and Des Moines.
- The annual resource fair, helping to connect participants with local organizations and businesses serving their needs.
- A talent showcase with musicians, dancers, and poets.
- Accessible sporting events.
- The annual presentation of the Vital Resource Award, awarded to a community organization that has offered an exceptional level of support in the course of 2013.
Going forward, advocates hope to facilitate greater public awareness about the obstacles faced by Americans with disables. “We’re still trying to conceptualize the ramps in people’s minds and hearts so that people have access to social, educational and work opportunities,” said Geoffrey Lauer, executive director of Brain Injury Alliance.
