Telehealth Increases Access for Rural Nebraskans

Posted on Mar 27, 2014

Doctors treating patients by use of video technology is exploding in its use. This advance in healthcare delivery is an important tool in treating in patients all across Nebraska. The Nebraska Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center are two of the biggest users of Telehealth. It allows specialists to triage stroke patients without the patients being transported to the location of the specialists. It helps surgery patients have a consultation with the anesthesiologist without the long trip to the hospital for a short visit. The Veterans Administration uses telehealth to provide therapy to psychiatric patients. Nebraska's medicaid regulations unfortunately have not caught up with technology and the legislature is proding the Medicaid administrator to make changes that will provide Nebraskans better access to health care at a lower cost. Not all doctors are sold on the telehealth experience and would rather meet and treat their patients in person.
